Fulbright US Scholar Award David Schmale III from Blacksburg, Virginia will develop new remote-sensing capabilities to sense and respond to harmful algal blooms (HABs) at the University of Waikato. David is a Professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Anna Clark from Minneapolis, Minnesota will research individualism, social welfare, and land rights in nineteenth century New Zealand at the history department of Victoria University, Wellington. Anna is a Professor of History at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Michelle Johnson-Jennings of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma will research a framework for Indigenous traditional healing within western medicine. Michelle is the Director at the Research for Indigenous Community Health (RICH) Center, Associate to the Dean for Indigenous Research and Assistant Professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Alice Fothergill from Burlington, Vermont will research children and disaster preparedness at the Joint Centre for Disaster Research at Massey University in Wellington. Alice is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Vermont.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Louise K. Davidson-Schmich from Miami, Florida is using her 2016 Fulbright US Scholar Award to research New Zealand’s female Prime Ministers (Jenny Shipley and Helen Clark) and teaching a class on Comparative Political Economy at the Victoria University of Wellington. Louise is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Miami.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Katherine Crawford-Garrett is an assistant professor of Teacher Education, Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of New Mexico. Her areas of scholarship include neoliberal contexts of schooling, teacher activism, critical literacy and feminism. Her research on her 2016 Fulbright US Scholar Award will focus on TeachFirst NZ, a programme that prepares university graduates in New Zealand to work in low-decile schools.

Fulbright US Scholar Award David Grainger from Salt Lake City, Utah is using his Fulbright US Scholar Award to develop a new nanoparticle toxicity assessment model for the brain at the University of Otago. David is a University Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Utah, and active consultant for the global medical device and drug delivery research and development enterprise.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Jessica Hardin from Staten Island, New York will research medical decision making in Samoan communities at the University of Auckland. Jessica is an Assistant Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Turner Goins from Asheville, North Carolina is researching the influence of cultural factors on healthy aging among Māori at the University of Auckland’s School of Population Health and Māori Studies. Turner is a Professor at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Alexandra Adams, from Bozeman, Montana, will research ‘Examining Models of Māori Indigenous Knowledge Incorporation in Health Promotion Programs’ at The University of Auckland. Alex is a Professor and the Director and Principal Investigator at the Centre for American Indian and Rural Health Equity (CAIRHE) at Montana State University. She has an MD in Medicine from the University of Illinois and a PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Joellen Russell from Tucson, Arizona will help design the modelling framework to combine atmospheric and oceanic observations in order to provide near-real-time information about carbon dioxide emissions and uptake with scientists at the National Institute of Water and Air (NIWA) in Wellington. Joellen is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Yvonne Vadeboncoeur from Los Altos, California will conduct research at the Cawthron Institute in Nelson to explore how aquatic food webs are impacted by proliferations of toxic algae in lakes and rivers. Yvonne is Professor of Biological Sciences at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

Katharine is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Amelia Jones from Los Angeles, California will write a book on queer performance theories and histories. Amelia is the Robert A. Day Professor in Art and Design and Vice Dean of Critical Studies at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Kelley Barsanti from Boulder, Colorado will research the linkages between fuels, fire behaviour, fire emissions, and air pollutant formation with the Rural Fire Research Group at Scion in Christchurch. Kelley is a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, in the Atmospheric Chemistry Observations and Modeling Laboratory, in Boulder, Colorado.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Kira Omelchenko, from Kansas, currently teaching in Ontario, is a music conductor. Her project involves collaborative performances with students, colleagues, and community members, as well as co-creating new music with local Indigenous and Classical composers in New Zealand at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington. Kira is an Associate Dean and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Music, at Wilfrid Laurier University. She has an MA in Orchestral Conducting from the University of New Mexico-Main Campus and a DMA in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Iowa.

Fulbright US Scholar Award David Wells, from Austin, Texas, will conduct research based at NIWA on the ocean basin connectivity of Pacific Bluefin Tuna throughout the Pacific Ocean. David is Associate Professor at Texas AandM University at Galveston in Galveston, Texas.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Nick McKay from Flagstaff, Arizona, will research the reconstruction of pre-human aquatic health for New Zealand’s lakes at GNS Science and Victoria University of Wellington. Nick is an Associate Professor in the School of Earth and Sustainability at Northern Arizona University.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Dustin Ballard from Marin County, California will research pediatric head injury at the University of Auckland and Starship Child Health. Dustin is the co-chair of the Kaiser Permanente CREST Network and the Medical Director for Emergency Medical Services in Marin County, California.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Peter Zazzali from Lawrence, Kansas is based at Toi Whakaari where he will teach and conduct research towards a sociocultural analysis of professional actor training in Anglophone countries. Peter is Associate Professor of Theatre at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.

Fulbright US Scholar Award Sheila Crowell from Eugene, Oregon, will research ‘Enhancing support for pregnant adolescents through a cross-cultural exchange of skills and resources in New Zealand’ at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington.
