US Fulbright Scholars
US Fulbright Scholars currently carrying out projects in the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region are eligible to receive funds to support short-term (3-14 days) travel to other countries, including New Zealand, for activities such as lectures, workshops, graduate or faculty seminars, master classes or recitals, curricular advising, panel presentations, etc.
Closing date: there is no specific closing date – US Scholars apply to their host country’s Fulbright office when on award
The purpose of this program is to share the expertise of US Fulbright Scholars already in the region more widely. For instance, a Fulbright Scholar based in Vietnam might travel to New Zealand to lecture in social philosophy, as well as to hold discussions about collaborative research efforts; or a Fulbright Scholar in Cambodia might travel to Japan to conduct environmental sciences seminars and meet with emergency service personnel; or a Fulbright Scholar based in South Korea could be invited by an institution in New Zealand to participate in a programme related to the role of the media in U.S. elections.
New Zealand host institutions
New Zealand institutions can extend invitations to US Fulbright Scholars in the EAP region in order to benefit from their academic and professional expertise during their Fulbright grant period. Eligible institution types include universities, non-profit organisations, government agencies, cultural and medical institutions, as well as research organisations and think tanks. The US Scholar then applies for Regional Travel Program funding to cover international transportation (only) to pursue the invitation.
Each year, Fulbright New Zealand receives a list of Scholars available for travel to New Zealand. This list includes areas of expertise and research topics the scholars are working on. For further information contact the award Programme Manager Morgan Bach, on [email protected] or 04 494 1500.
Please note:
- Fulbright New Zealand cannot assist in setting up affiliations between US Scholars and potential hosts.
- Fulbright NZ cannot offer funding for accommodation or expenses – if required the US Scholar should discuss this with their host.
- If relevant, Scholars proposing a visit should consult with their proposed host institution to ensure appropriate cultural awareness and sensitivity, particularly in relation to Tikanga Māori.
