Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Programme for US Teachers

The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Programme is for highly accomplished American teachers in primary or secondary schooling to participate in an intensive professional development programme in New Zealand. A small number of awards are granted each year towards three to five months of professional development. Grantees will study at a New Zealand host university and conduct an inquiry project related to their professional interests. Additional activities in local schools include opportunities to observe classes, team teach or conduct seminars or workshops. Grantees will also participate in a web-based collaborative project with other participants to share best practices and other elements of host country educational systems. Academic support will be provided by a host institution advisor who will support the grantee and help contribute to the design and activities of the project. As part of the programme, teachers will also participate in a virtual community with other participants to collaborate and share best practices about education in the participating countries. Upon returning to the US, grantees will be expected to share the knowledge and experience gained on the programme with teachers and students in their home schools and within their communities.

Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Graduate Award

The Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Graduate Award is for a promising New Zealand graduate student to undertake postgraduate study or research at a US institution in the field of indigenous development. One award valued at up to US$50,000 (plus NZ$4,000 travel funding) is granted annually for up to one year of study or research in the US. Students undertaking multi-year Masters or PhD degrees have the opportunity to apply for additional funding of up to US$40,000 towards their second year of study. This award is offered in partnership with Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, the Māori Centre of Research Excellence funded by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and hosted by the University of Auckland. The award is available for study or research that fits within and contributes to the NPM Research Programme and NPM’s priorities and themes. Fulbright New Zealand Graduate Awards can be used towards a Masters or PhD programme, or grantees can participate as a Visiting Student Researcher (VSR). A VSR allows grantees to spend between 6-12 months studying or researching a topic or proposed project in the US, usually as part of a degree programme within New Zealand. This can be an attractive option for those pursuing a graduate degree at a New Zealand institution, when research in the US would supplement or aid their programme. A VSR does not require full graduate school admission into a US institution, and instead requires a letter of invitation from a host institution. Note: Recipients of this award are eligible for the Robin W. and Avril Flockton Winks Award. Find out more below. Robin W. and Avril Flockton Winks Award
